The New York Mets removed the interim tag on manager Andy Green and signed him to a three-year contract on Tuesday.
The Mets are 37-38 with six games remaining in the regular season under Green, who took over after Carlos Mendoza was fired on June 26 with a 34-47 mark at the halfway point.
“Andy has connected with and pushed our players to perform, despite the disappointment of the season,” owners Steve and Alex Cohen said in a news release. “Over the last several months, he has brought discipline, accountability and positivity to the clubhouse, attributes we were seeking in our next manager.”
Mendoza, 46, was 206-199 during his two-plus seasons as manager of the Mets, who are in the cellar of the National League East this year despite a payroll of about $356 million. They endured a 12-game losing streak in April and had lost six straight when Green, who was with the club in a player development role, was named interim manager.
“When I accepted the interim role, I didn’t anticipate it becoming permanent, but the more time I spent with our players and staff, the clearer it became that this is where my passion and experience could make the greatest impact,” Green, 49, said in the news release.
“That realization led to many conversations with my family, and together we agreed this is the right opportunity at the right time,” added Green, who previously served as senior vice president of baseball development.
Green had previous management experience with the San Diego Padres, who went 274-366 (.428) from 2016-19. He also was bench coach of the Chicago Cubs (2020-23).
He was a major league infielder for parts of four seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2004-06) and Mets (four games in 2009).
“Over the course of the season, it became evident that the next manager of the New York Mets was already in place,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said in the news release. “Andy has demonstrated strong leadership qualities and a unique ability to forge connections with our emerging core and distinguished veterans. I look forward to continuing our great partnership as we turn toward the 2027 season.”
The Mets last made the playoffs in 2024, advancing to the National League Championship Series where they lost to the eventual World Series-champion Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.
